The Pre-Congress Training Workshops aim to disseminate the latest scientific knowledge on issues of regional and global significance that have been comprehensively debated within the framework of IUFRO’s Task Forces. IUFRO-Special Programme for Developing Countries (SPDC) in collaboration with the Korea Forest Research Institute will be conducting this year’s workshops in the Forest Human Resources Development Institute from 16-20 August 2010.

Forest Human Resources Development Institute

The Institute was established under the Korea Forest Service in 2006. Located in Gwangneung, the Institute is embraced by serene hills covered in dense temperate forest. The Institute is committed to cultivate professional leaders in forest welfare by conducting various education programs locally and in abroad including forest tending, city part and green zone management as well forest fire protection just to name a few.  In addition, the Institute also encourages learning through programs like Action Learning, Self-directed Learning and  Cyber Education.

In-Congress Tours are available to all registered participants with the purpose of providing them with an overview of Korea’s forests, forestry and other tourist attractions. Visiting these technical sites will surely be a relaxing break from the congress yet brings you closer to the enchanting nature of this land. 

If you’ve chosen the tour on Protected Area for Biological Diversity (IC-01), here’s a ‘preview’ to some of the interesting spots. One of these routes will take you to Soopchehwon. In Soopchehwon, you’ll be greeted not only by the lush greenery backed by larch and oak trees but also by a peaceful ambience and cooling air amidst the warm summer. This place also serves as a forest education centre. With a 1km long deck road leading you into the forest and a clear stream running through its belly, look out for ‘sweet-smelling’ boxes at certain points. These boxes display different kinds of wood that produce pleasant aroma. Don’t forget to get a glimpse of the mushroom garden also.  

 This tour will take you to Mount Odae National Park that stretches over 303 square kilometres. The park is habitat to various animals and plants including endemic and endangered species (Pix: The ‘host’ boldly greets its guests). The vegetation in Mount Odae has changed from the past with some new species finding their ways into the forest. Listen to the guides who’ll tell you more about the dynamics of this spectacular mountain. Besides its biodiversity and scenic view, this park is also famous for the Woljung Temple. In this tour, some of you may also be able to visit the Gyeonggi Ceramics Musuem.
